About this book

Walk into most care homes in England, and the population you find will look remarkably alike.

Older adults from racially minoritised communities are among the least visible groups within the UK care home system, their needs shaped by histories of migration, mistrust, and structural neglect that mainstream care models rarely account for.

Drawing on original research into lived experience, decision making, and access among Black and South Asian older adults, Invisible in Care traces why this invisibility persists: from the earned mistrust of the Windrush generation and South Asian migrants, through a policy-practice gap that leaves good intentions unfunded, to the everyday absence of culturally safe food, language, and dignity inside residential care.

Blending original research, established theory from cultural safety and historical trauma to intersectionality and the ethics of care, with the real experiences of residents, families, and staff, this book sets out what dignity actually requires when culture, language, and racial identity are taken seriously rather than treated as an afterthought.

Written for nursing, social work, gerontology, and public health practitioners, commissioners, CQC inspectors, care home managers, and postgraduate students.
