Aims and scope
The Journal of Culturally Responsive Health Practice is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by Ajibade Academic Publishing. The journal publishes original research, theoretical frameworks, systematic and narrative reviews, and practice-based evidence that advances the understanding and delivery of health and social care across cultural, racial, religious, and linguistic contexts.
The journal takes as its founding premise that culture is not a complicating variable in health and social care. It is a fundamental dimension of how illness is experienced, how care is sought and refused, and how recovery is understood and pursued.
The journal welcomes submissions from across nursing, medicine, social work, public health, allied health professions, health professions education, and related social sciences. We are particularly interested in work that addresses the following areas:
- Minoritised & migrant healthThe mental and physical health experiences of racially minoritised, culturally diverse, and migrant communities in the UK and internationally
- Structural racismStructural racism, institutional inequity, and their measurable effects on health outcomes
- Cultural safetyCulturally responsive and culturally safe models of clinical assessment, intervention, and care planning
- Faith & spiritualityThe role of faith, spirituality, and religion in health-seeking behaviour, illness experience, and recovery
- Decolonising educationDecolonising health professions education: curriculum reform, pedagogy, and institutional transformation
- Race & belonging at workRace, belonging, and identity in nursing and healthcare workplaces
- Mentorship & supervisionMentorship, supervision, and professional development for racially minoritised healthcare staff
- Domestic abuseDomestic abuse, coercive control, and intimate partner violence in culturally specific contexts
- Ageing & dignityAgeing, dignity, and care for older adults from racially minoritised and migrant communities
- Stigma & help-seekingMental health stigma, help-seeking, and access in culturally diverse communities

What we do not publish
The journal does not publish purely technical or biomedical research that does not engage with cultural, racial, or equity dimensions. We do not publish research that treats culture as an afterthought or as a demographic variable without analytical engagement. We do not publish work that pathologises cultural difference or that reproduces deficit framings of racially minoritised or migrant communities.
Readership
The journal is written for and read by nurses, clinicians, social workers, public health professionals, health professions educators, researchers, policymakers, commissioners, and postgraduate students. We also welcome submissions from practitioners working in community, voluntary, and faith-based sectors who are engaged in culturally responsive health and social care work.
Submit a paper
The online submission portal opens in 2027. In the meantime, authors wishing to register interest in submitting a paper, propose a special issue, or discuss a potential contribution are welcome to contact the editor-in-chief directly.
The journal publishes the following article types:
Original research articles
Empirical studies using qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods. Maximum 8,000 words excluding references, tables, and figures.
Review articles
Systematic reviews, scoping reviews, or narrative reviews. Maximum 9,000 words excluding references.
Theoretical and conceptual papers
Original frameworks, models, or conceptual contributions. Maximum 7,000 words excluding references.
Practice-based papers
Evidence-based accounts of innovative clinical or educational practice with evaluative evidence. Maximum 6,000 words excluding references.
Short communications
Brief reports of preliminary findings, methodological innovations, or policy commentary. Maximum 3,000 words excluding references.
Letters to the Editor
Responses to recently published articles. Maximum 800 words.
All original research and review articles submitted to the journal undergo double-blind peer review. Each submission is assessed by at least two independent reviewers with relevant subject expertise. The editor-in-chief makes all final editorial decisions. The journal adheres to the ethical standards of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and follows COPE guidelines in all matters of editorial conduct, research integrity, and publication ethics.
The journal publishes two issues per year, with additional special issues commissioned on specific themes as the editorial board determines. All content is open access under a Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 licence, meaning readers may freely access, share, and adapt published material provided they credit the original authors and source.
Author guidelines
The full guidelines cover article types, manuscript preparation, anonymisation, referencing, ethics, authorship, licensing, and the revision and proofing process. Key requirements are:
- Manuscripts submitted as Microsoft Word (.docx) files
- APA 7th edition referencing throughout
- Structured abstract of 250 words maximum
- Main manuscript file fully anonymised for double-blind review
- Ethics approval details included for all research involving human participants
- Author contributions statement and conflict of interest declaration required

The journal is committed to assembling a board that reflects genuine disciplinary breadth, international diversity, and expertise across the clinical, academic, community, and policy dimensions of culturally responsive health practice.
Indexing
The journal will apply for indexing in DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals), Crossref, and Google Scholar following publication of the first issue. Scopus and Web of Science applications are planned from Year 2.
